Rising above your station can be deadly.

Cliffy is a child born on the streets of a Neo-Victorian world. Witnesses to a murder, he blackmails a nobleman, receiving a unique bribe. In exchange for his silence, the nobleman introduces him to the Malcolm Rutherford Holden Institute of Regentrification. There, Cliffy learns to walk, talk, and act like a nobleman, so that he may infiltrate high society. But that type of fraud is punishable by death, and when Cliffy uncovers a plot to assassinate a head of state, he's hunted by more than just the aristocracy.

Royal intrigue, daring escapes, sub-dermal machines, and bear polo. A grand adventure in a not-so-distant world.

@miz: Thanks very much! And yeah, I know it feels kinda short. If I ever re-do it, I'll put in more Bear Polo and politically dangerous parties. :)

too short

This is my first foray into the Steampunk genre and it's certainly intriguing. The narration is what enabled me to persevere and I'm glad I stuck with it. If you are a hard core sci-fi fan you might enjoy this sojourn into another world of scientific application. I will be seeking out other books by Brand Gamblin...having also enjoyed his book Tumbler. Just a suggestion Brand...let your excellent writing create the dramatic tension and not the music....

Only about an hour in, so far, but had to take a moment to rant. Absolutely fascinating story concept, but the expertly performed clockworkorangesque dialogue keeps me grinning so hard that I'm creeping out my wife. Scott Sigler, watch your six, my man. After another hour, I feel compelled to comment that I'm still grinning like an idiot. This much fun is usually illegal.

...but with no singing. It was a lot of fun and very creative. The author is an excellent narrator. Like others, I wish it had been longer and the ending not so rushed. A great piece over all. Would love to see more from Cliffy and/or the Institute.

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the story. Since you mentioned additional material, I should let you know that there's a short story called "The Kody's Shame, or Let Sleeping Bears Lie", available from Flying Island Press. The Kody's Shame is a short story about how our friend Dizzy has ...

interesting premise

Started well, but turned silly quickly. Author seems to forget the protagonist is 15. He mentions The Crone was a few years younger than Clifford, which would make her 13. The music between sections was annoying!

Loved the book. The narration was great and the story really hooked me. The only complaint I had, and this is just personal opinion, is that the musical interludes were too long. Looking forward to future works!
