Ancestors: A Novel

Read by Lynne T

(3.8 stars; 9 reviews)

Flora, the daughter of a clergyman, grew up the playmate of the castle children but learned early on that a certain prettiness and good breeding did not put her in the same class as her friends. With the sudden death of her father and no chance of a rich husband, poverty was looming and the young woman may be forced to earn her living. As a companion to Lady Victoria Gwynne, she meets an American cousin come to trace her ancestry. - Summary by Lynne Thompson (20 hr 58 min)

Reviews

Great reader! Content-not so much

(3 stars)

Lynn T. does an excellent job of reading this novel. The novel itself is not particularly well written. The story reads as if it’s ever-expanding with no hope of well-developed characters or plots. Atherton seems to prefer wandering aimlessly through a vague plot and ending at an inconclusive or meaningless ending. (Mrs Balfame is another example of her meandering style of storytelling.) I’m sure this author has many fans. I’m not one of them. Again, Lynn does a very good job of reading this text. Four stars for reading and one star for content so I’m rating it at three because the novel doesn’t stand up to the quality of Lynn’s reading.

Boring.

(2 stars)

Not because of the reader, though. I just found the story boring. The author wrote entire chapters about people's irrelevant histories. Also, the description has nothing to do with the actual storyline (I listened to book 1 or 2, chapter 12).

5 Stars for the Narration

(5 stars)

It’s ok. The first chapter didn’t cause me to care about the protagonist. It gets better tho.
