Midnight Cab (Dramatized for Radio)

(4.9 stars; 6 reviews)

The complete dramatized for radio edition of Midnight Cab by James Nichol. I'm not sure of the exact time of recording but I believe it was late 80's early 90's before the heavy decline of serial shows dramatized for radio. I will be back in the future with more shows. Currently working on Vanishing Point and Nightfall collections.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

Info on Midnight Cab

(5 stars)

Midnight Cab was produced and directed (all episodes) as part of THE MYSTERY PROJECT by Bill Howell out of the Toronto CBC radio drama studios from 1992-96. The 1990s was full of mystery in Canada. Weekday broadcasts on CBC Radio featured more than a dozen detectives in fully dramatized mysteries. This was a result of The Mystery Project. Perhaps the most listened to series under this banner was Midnight Cab, a half-hour mystery show about a 19 year old Toronto cab driver named Walker Devereaux. Here’s what Thrilling Detective has to say about Midnight Cab: One of the best series airing as part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s The Mystery Project is Midnight Cab, which was aired in three runs of 13 episodes, 9 episodes, and 13 episodes (making a total of 35 episodes for the series). … The show starred David Ferry as WALKER DEVEREAUX, a young man, rather gullible and naive, from Bear River (north of Lake Superior) who comes to Toronto in order to become an author and winds up driving a cab on the midnight shift. From the start, he keeps running into problems (such as that body that someone left in the trunk of his cab), and he solves the mysteries with the help of his girlfriend, wheelchair-bound Krista Papadopoulos (who dispatches cabs), Alfonso Piatelli (his boss), and Metro Police Inspector Wilfred Kiss (a friendly homicide cop). Each episode is fairly self-contained, but the series builds on its past episodes as well, so we see Walker’s developing relationship with Krista, his coming to terms with the big city, etc. PS Midnight Cab was rebroadcast for the last 2 seasons on CBC’s anchor radio program Morningside with Peter Gzowski….which afforded the show a massive (in Canadian terms) audience.

It's telling that an art form that was in large part an American invention was reinvigorated by our neighbors to the North. This CBC series easily rivals the golden age of 1950s detective dramas. While the sound effects are minimal, the writing and acting are superb. It's easy to develop real affection for these characters, who become real to our mind's ear. I've run through these rapidly, like someone hungry gorging on a chocolate bar; feeling sad that the more I listen, the fewer are left.

I happened across this serialized story some years ago and throughly enjoyed it. I just recently came across it again and enjoyed it again. Excellent writing of the radio script and the voice acting was supurb as well. As always with these type of radio programs I am sorry when I reach the conclusion of episodes. Thank you to all involved with this project for many hours of audio enjoyment.

Worth listening to, however, these are definitely not in the public domain and are still copyrighted by the CBC.
