Stoopnagle & Budd: If We Supervised Radio (15 March 1935, CBS)

(3 stars; 1 reviews)

The only known surviving installment of Stoopnagle & Budd's 1930s radio shows. The duo (Frederick Chase Taylor, William Budd Kulick) are considered to have been radio's earliest satirists, whose disciples would come to include Fred Allen and Bob & Ray (much of whose freewheeling deviltry may have been modeled at first on Stoopnagle & Budd), until the partnership broke up with no public explanation in 1937. Col. Stoopnagle became a frequent radio presence with a foray or two into early television until his unexpected death in 1950.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

Bob & Ray influence

(3 stars)

Having once interviewed B&R in the late '60s, I can state that in response to a question about their comic inspiration, Ray replied, and Bob agreed, that they both were fans of Stoopnagle & Budd and had them in mind early in their career. This program showcases S&B's jolly nihilism, comic self-branding and pretense of low self-regard, all to become part of B&R's style. Enjoy!!
