R. U. R. Rossums Universal Robots [German]

RUR - Rossum's Universal Robots [German] Karel Capek 1978 BR; RIAS Running time: 65 minutes Genre: Science Fiction Director: Heiner Schmidt Editing: Dieter Hasselblatt Translator: Otto Pick A science fiction classic in a radio play version. The Czech writer's "utopian collective drama" with clear echoes of the legend of the Golem was premiered on January 5th, 1921 in Prague; since then the term 'robot', derived from the Czech word robota for 'work', has entered the general vocabulary. The American company Rossums Universal Robots wants to supply the whole world with workers with its automatic, biochemically generated, humanoid machines. Outwardly, the RUR proclaims to free mankind from the compulsion to work. But then a scientist illegally instills human emotions in some robots. The machines prove to be docile, they found a revolutionary mass organization, defend themselves against their exploitation, rise - and they kill people ... "For me, recognizing the unheard-of complexity of reality is a matter of respecting reality; a respect that increases to astonishment. We humans have been given a piece of the universe so that we can conquer it; we don't just get to its depths by one path ; we probe them with our deeds, with science, poetry, love and also with religion; we need different methods to measure our world with their help. The immense value of life cannot be judged from just one side I think that somewhere we are touching the non-localized, but agonizing pain of today's people "(Karel Capek).
