V-E Day in London BBC Radio Commentary Macdonald Hastings On 7 May  1945  the formal act of military surrender was signed by Germany, ending the war in Europe. The next  day  celebrations broke out all over the world to mark  Victory  in Europe or  VE Day . In Britain, Churchill marked the occasion by declaring 8 May a public holiday. Douglas Edward Macdonald "Mac" Hastings  (6 October 1909 – 4 October 1982), known as  Macdonald Hastings , was an English journalist, author and  war correspondent .  Maffick  is an alteration of  Mafeking  Night, the British celebration of the lifting  of the siege of a British military outpost during the  South African War  at the town  of Mafikeng (also spelled  Mafeking ) on May 17, 1900.
