Set in 1961, Maggie and Michael are anxiously awaiting the results of the 11+ exam. After learning of Yuri Gagarin's heroic feat, they embark on an adventure which involves inviting him to English to meet with them. Their summer turns into one of lost innocence and fading childhood dreams as Maggie and Michael plan to go their separate ways. A 'coming of age' play that asks questions about social engineering, loyalty, ambition and the importance of having a dream, 'The Spaceman' contains plenty of humour as it recalls the universal experience of growing up. Afternoon Play: The Spaceman First Broadcast: 31 January 2003 BBC Radio 4
