When a passenger named Sluiter dies on board a chartered boat, the English captain, Furse, is launched on a hunt for a quarter of a million pounds worth of diamonds stolen from an Amsterdam bank. To win the prize, he needs to out-manoeuvre Detective Inspector Molenaar, acting for the bank, and Rohner, a top-flight crook. He has a clue, "Seven Flies", but what does it mean?
