Crime Club

(3.8 stars; 2 reviews)

Crime Club was a 1946-1947 radio series based on the successful imprint for mystery novel series published by Doubleday. Each episode was introduced by a phone call to the series to “The Librarian” of the Club, who invites the caller to read the story at the library. “The Librarian” was played by by Barry Thomson and Raymond Edward Johnson ( he had lost his role as “Raymond, Your Host” on Inner Sanctum Mysteries a year or so earlier ). The series began December 2, 1946 and continued until October 16, 1947. The book series was successful, but the radio series was not. The episode in the Hehn collection is 1947-10-16, “Cupid Can be Deadly.” * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table."
