The Ghost:  Robert Harris' thriller read by Douglas Hodge 1/10.  A professional ghost writer takes on an assignment to write the memoirs of a former Prime Minister. 2/10.   He reads the first draft of the memoirs. The ghost writer realises that things can only get a whole lot worse. 3/10.   Lang's charisma is all the ghost writer ever thought it would be, but the details of his life are strangely hard to grasp. 4/10.   Events quickly conspire against the ghost writer.  An investigation is launched into the former PM's time in power. 5/10. The world's press descend on Adam Lang in his Martha's Vineyard retreat.   6/10.   Full of foreboding about the fate of his predecessor, Adam Lang's ghostwriter learns something to make his hair stand on end. 7/10.  The  ghostwriter wakes up in  the  arms of his client's wife.   8/10. Cold, clammy fear seizes the ghostwriter when he tracks a figure from Adam Lang's past and finds himself caught up in a world of CIA agents and bull-necked hard men. 9/10.  The ghostwriter is caught between a rock and a hard place - behind him is the full force of the secret state, in front, a single-minded man bent on destroying Adam Lang 10/10.  The ghostwriter returns to London to finish Adam Lang's memoirs. for anyone who wondered where those people who go through life being "the chosen", come from: and for the others who have scratched a little deeper and realise that the effort to become an important person is a multi generational endeavour, where seats are kept for the old school tie and favours swapped silently.
