McGarvey to the Young Men's Christian Association of the University of Missouri, May 28th, 1893. J.W. (John William) McGarvey (1829-1911) was one of the leading ministers and religious educators of the American Restoration Movement. During the last decades of the 19th century he devoted much of his time to countering the claims of higher criticism and theological liberalism. In this sermon he builds his argument on a comparison of the Bible as biography and history to the writings of secular authors, and on its moral impact on the lives of individuals.
