North Star Parade : 1966-01-20 : Radio Variety with Jimmy Clitheroe

North Star Parade   :  Originally broadcast January 20th, 1966. A lost British Variety Show from 1966, produced in Manchester by James Casey, sourced from a recently discovered off-air tape recording. This long lost radio broadcast originally aired 20th January 1966 on the North of England transmitters of the Home Service. It was subsequently repeated on that service on 3rd July 1966. North region was one of the six regional sub-divisions of the Home Service. The show had its only national broadcast 11th April 1966 on the Light Programme. Due to resistance to the concept of light entertainment amongst the BBC heirarchy, it was difficult to get Northern entertainers any exposure outside the north of England. Hence the Home Service chose not to air this show nationally, and the BBC Sound Archive in London refused to archive the recording, which survives only by chance as an off air recording made by a listener. The show's producer, James Casey, was at the time of this recording also producing the radio comedy series The Clitheroe Kid , which explains the presence on this broadcast of two of the stars of that series, Jimmy Clitheroe and Danny Ross, heard here in a long lost Clitheroe Kid sketch. Clitheroe had previously made dozens of light entertainment broadcasts on radio, during the period 1955 to 1959, in variety shows and in situation comedies, but the BBC junked them all. Any recording of him in a variety show is exceptionally rare. A Glittering Array of Northern Talent WILFRED PICKLES introduces ALBERT MODLEY, RONNIE HILTON, EDDIE CALVERT, JIMMY CLITHEROE, DANNY ROSS, BARBARA ROBOTHAM, PETER GOODWRIGHT and THE BARRY SISTERS. Accompanied by THE BBC NORTHERN DANCE ORCHESTRA directed by BERNARD HERRMANN.
