The Book of A Thousand Nights and a Night (Arabian Nights), Volume 02

(4.1 stars; 33 reviews)

This is a collection of stories collected over thousands of years by various authors, translators and scholars. The are an amalgam of mythology and folk tales from the Indian sub-continent, Persia, and Arabia. No original manuscript has ever been found for the collection, but several versions date the collection's genesis to somewhere between AD 800-900. The stories are wound together under the device of a long series of cliff-hangers told by Shahrazad to her husband Shahryar, to prevent him from executing her. Many tales that have become independently famous come from the Book, among them Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and the voyages of Sinbad the Sailor. This collection comes from the second of sixteen volumes translated by Burton. (based on Wikipedia article) (15 hr 47 min)

Amazing achievement

Amazing translation. And an amazing work of literature. Thanks to the readers

Amazing, listen to it every night

some of the narrators..

(3.5 stars)

The translation is beyond excellent (I know bc I am fluent in Arabic and own the volumes in Arabic). The story is what it is, for the time. The narrators are something else; some are excellent but some are just horrible, and have no business reading out loud a book that contains so many non English names and terms... parts of the story are just painful to listen to.

wonderful

Really enjoying the stories. On to volume 3!

Frustrating and Disappointing

(0.5 stars)

Despite excellent narration, I have given up on this one. The characters are constantly breaking into long-winded rhymes instead of simply stating events. The inherent foulness of poetry (too harsh?) just makes following the story impossible. It's like a bad rap version of some classic work of literature, or something equally horrid. Run, don't walk, away.
