Barnaby Rudge

A wayside tavern where the local men drink and gossip; an unsolved, twenty year old murder at a nearby mansion; a very talkative black raven; a London locksmith and his family; a man apparently returned from the dead; a hangman who enjoys his job way too much; an anti-Catholic lord; a large and violent mob; and the British Militia—what do all these things have in common? All have, in some way, touched or been touched by the lovable, young, simple-minded “idiot,” Barnaby Rudge.

Barnaby’s good nature makes him a joy to most who know him. Unfortunately, his eagerness to please and his gullibility make him an easy prey for the unscrupulous. Can he emerge unscathed when once he gets tangled up with the wrong crowd?

Once again, Dickens has managed to temper the horrific with his characteristic wit and humor, as he tells this tale based on the "no-popery" or Gordon riots of 1780.

(Note: If the bird in this story seems familiar, it may be because he was the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, “The Raven.”) (Summary by Debra Lynn) (24 hr 17 min)

Reviews

A bit of mystery . . . and a wonderful set of good and evil characters

(4 stars)

Librivox has two recordings of Barnaby Rudge. I listened to the older version by DebraLynn and it was excellent. Debra doesn't do "voices", but her reading is steady, clear and engaging. And Dickens' characters are exceptional and exceptionally entertaining, as usual. My favorite character was Mr. V. Loved how when it mattered, he stood up for what was right and in so doing restored the peace of his home. This was a bit of history that I didn't know anything about. Clearly Dickens brings his own take on that history, but when you see it through the eyes of his characters, it brings the events to life. I've never "read" Dickens, but thanks to Librivox, I've listened to a number of his books and with each book, I'm more captivated by how he uses the English language to paint pictures and characters. I'd recommend this book to those looking for a good "listen" of classic British literature.

A very engaging story with an ending more happy than I expected! The reader did an excellent job, clear pronunciations and good pace. She didn’t try any accents or pitches that were unnatural to her which in this case made it easy to get absorbed in the story without interruption.

when is the most exciting books we have ever heard. I listen to it first recovering from a knee transplant and just now listen to it one more time with my husband. we enjoyed it so much. I think it might be Dickens most readable or listenable book.

Thank you

I appreciated Deborah Lynn's reading of Barnaby Rudge. It is not one if Dickens most popular books but combines historical fiction with romance and interesting characters. Thank you for making tnis book available on Librivox.
