Reviews

Great adventure story, but...

(2 stars)

I love the stories in the series, which are clever and well described, but the group of readers all seem to suffer difficulty in pronouncing any French words. One even referred to a "GILL-o-teen" which was grating. The Baroness deserves better. there was also a volume issue with a couple of chapters being exceptionally quiet.

Vintage Pimpernel, told mostly from stranger's voice

(5 stars)

Enjoyable, amusing, and brief tales. the sort that fill in the gaps of Sir Percy's and Chauvelin's tortured relationship. A variety of readers with varied levels of experience aided me nicely in knowing these stories, and I am grateful for their complimentary service.

Some quality control please!

(2.5 stars)

Although I applaud the efforts of the volunteer readers it seems ludicrous to have someone without a passing acquaintance with the French language read a book about the French Revolution. Moreover there are many English mispronounciations. Spoils the enjoyment of the book!

Poor stories, motley readers

(2 stars)

The readers ranged between great to hilariously unqualified (but they're volunteering, so who can complain?) But the book itself just kind of fizzled on... Expected better from the author of the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Painful pronunciation

(2 stars)

Not only can she not pronounce the most basic French (Jaques, guillotine), but English is also challenging to her stuttered, grating reading (surreptitious, etc) It’s painful.

(4 stars)

The story is enjoyable but some of the narration is stilted. It is worth listening through even with this difficulty!

(2.5 stars)

What a difference the reader makes. Book 1 was painful to listen to.... book 8 unbearable. Storyline was fine.

(5 stars)

Some sequels are flops ... but these sequels are perfect! Some readers need vocabulary correction, otherwise well done.
