The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (version 2)

A collection of twelve short stories featuring Conan Doyle's legendary detective, originally published as single stories in Strand Magazine and subsequently collected into a single volume.

There is not always a crime committed nor a culprit to find, and when there is, Holmes does not invariably get his man. However, his extraordinary powers of deduction generally solve the mystery, often to the discomfiture of the official police force. Holmes is a man of many facets, and I do not share the common perception of Holmes as cold and humourless: his sense of fun can be sparkling, and there are moments of rare pathos. Excellent narration

(5 stars)

My introduction to audio books and I was not disappointed. Ruth Holding handles her narrative clearly and depicts the different characters very well. I didn't mind that it. was a little slow as it allowed me time to grasp the story. Love these mysteries and look forward to hearing some more.

Great stories and reader

Ruth really brings these stories to life. I appreciate her reading so much. Thank you for the huge effort involved. Wonderful stories too, of course.

I love this lady narrator! would listen to anything read by her

Excellent book and narration

(5 stars)

Ruth Golding's superb voice and character impersonation bring delightful life to this classic (yet by no means archaic) detective fiction. Sherlock Holmes, no matter how many times revived in new television programs, remains best told in the original way in which he was written. The stories show not much in human nature has changed, and are just as riveting as any modern tale.

Highly recommended

What a great book and what a great reader! I had read some SH adventures in the past, but I never had the time to read them all. I spent some wonderful winter mornings walking ti work and listening to these recordings.

Sherlock Holmes

(4.5 stars)

The difference in the phrases used, the tone of voice, and the attitudes towards the classes (rich vs poor), and especially towards women make for an interesting read. Then throw in a darn good story makes a very good read.
