The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (version 2)

(4.6 stars; 1790 reviews)

A collection of twelve short stories featuring Conan Doyle's legendary detective, originally published as single stories in Strand Magazine and subsequently collected into a single volume.

There is not always a crime committed nor a culprit to find, and when there is, Holmes does not invariably get his man. However, his extraordinary powers of deduction generally solve the mystery, often to the discomfiture of the official police force. Holmes is a man of many facets, and I do not share the common perception of Holmes as cold and humourless: his sense of fun can be sparkling, and there are moments of rare pathos. Splendid reading

(5 stars)

Well I say Holmes that was a fine narration by Ruth Golding. "Capital, Watson. Capital. Miss Golding is certainly an agile verbal gymnast with an excellent variety of inflections and tone. She certainly brought the story to life. And of course she revealed my exceeding cleverness."

Excellent

(5 stars)

This was my first exposure to Doyle's works, drawn to them by the Sherlock TV series. I have since listened to A Study In Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, and some of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, and these are my favourites so far. The stories are short and creative, making it easy to pick up and put down. Ruth's narration is excellent; the use of different inflections and character-appropriate accents allows you to become immersed in the story. Highly recommended.

great reader

Sherlock Holmes stories have become my preferred bedtime stories, and I've listened to several Librivox books. Ruth Golding is by far the best reader for these stories! She gives each character a distinct voice. and overall her voice is soothing and pleasant. I was sorry when I had finished all the stories, as I wanted more.

Great stories and great job by Ms Golden. I have watched lots of the series of Sherlock Holmes and I have to admit that I felt that I was there while it was being narrated. What a super job and dedication! Thank you for the enjoyable time that you have given me! The only issue is that I was sad when I heard the last story. What a great performance! Thanks Again! Ms Golden.

Great, but...

I absolutely love listening to this, and the reader does a great job with it. However, there appears to be some sort of glitch in it, because the chapters suddenly end abruptly and move on to the next, leaving me curious and confused with the ending of one their adventures. Maybe it's my phone?

I love the way Ruth reads these stories!! She brings each character to life with her different voice tones; which make the characters loveable and believable; especially Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. The voice she used for each sounds like what I think these men would have sounded like. A-one job in reading out loud. Ruth should get an award for such a superb reading.

A Fascinating and Delightful Read

(5 stars)

Holmes may judge my belief that this series of short stories was clearly an obvious delight! He says, "There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact," but it's so interesting to follow him, from his dear friend Watson's view, on each of his twisting adventures. Ruth Golding does an AMAZING job of giving life and voice to all of the characters. I look forward to hearing more stories brought to life by her dynamic vocal portrayals. Would highly recommend!

Fabulous if a little slowly read

(4 stars)

I had to use the speed up option to make the reading a little less slow and more engaging, but otherwise it's read brilliantly and the voices the reader uses to identify the characters are great and not frustrating like many readers can be.
