The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (version 2)

(4.6 stars; 2218 reviews)

A collection of twelve short stories featuring Conan Doyle's legendary detective, originally published as single stories in Strand Magazine and subsequently collected into a single volume.

There is not always a crime committed nor a culprit to find, and when there is, Holmes does not invariably get his man. However, his extraordinary powers of deduction generally solve the mystery, often to the discomfiture of the official police force. Holmes is a man of many facets, and I do not share the common perception of Holmes as cold and humourless: his sense of fun can be sparkling, and there are moments of rare pathos. Great book, great reader

(5 stars)

What an exciting book... and what a great reader. I shall search for the same reader again... all accents were convincing, the reading is clear and pleasant to listen to. Thank you, Ruth

Great!

(4 stars)

The stories of the book are totally fabulous. The reading was nice, in fact, it should have been a bit faster. To be honest, Ruth neatly read out the dialogues; the characters were brought into life by her.

I will continue to listen to the tales of sherlock and Watson as long as this life permits me to do so, I think real police detectives could learn a thing or two from sir aurthur Conan doyles tales because even I, an artist with a very short attention span, now see the world under a brighter light, sincerely.. Very professional!

I had to fight the impulse to search Google for BBC mini-series in which Ruth Golding has appeared! Certainly she has the voice of a trained RSC actress. Thanks Ruth.

Wonderful Narration!

(5 stars)

If your first exposure to Sherlock was the TV series on BBC, you may find the stories in this book to be a little on the simple side. What really makes this a stand out audiobook, is the completely excellent narration! This is in my top ten audiobooks, paid or otherwise. Every character has a unique voice - the reader is so talented!

Stunning!

(5 stars)

Incredibly well recited. Excellent pace, and the subtle shift in tone/pitch/voice for each character is so well executed. Of course, the character's infamous deductive reasoning is so much fun to listen to, despite some of the logical leaps.

Excellent narration

(5 stars)

My introduction to audio books and I was not disappointed. Ruth Holding handles her narrative clearly and depicts the different characters very well. I didn't mind that it. was a little slow as it allowed me time to grasp the story. Love these mysteries and look forward to hearing some more.

Fabulous if a little slowly read

(4 stars)

I had to use the speed up option to make the reading a little less slow and more engaging, but otherwise it's read brilliantly and the voices the reader uses to identify the characters are great and not frustrating like many readers can be.
