"Sometimes in the course of his experience, a detective, while engaged in ferreting out the mystery of one crime, runs inadvertently upon the clue to another. But rarely has this been done in a manner more unexpected or with attendant circumstances of greater interest than in the instance I am now about to relate.

For some time the penetration of certain Washington officials had been baffled by the clever devices of a gang of counterfeiters who had inundated the western portion of Massachusetts with spurious Treasury notes. Some of the best talent of the Secret Service had been expended upon the matter, but with no favorable result, when, one day, notice was received at Washington that a number of suspicious-looking letters, addressed to the simple initials, X. Y. Z., Brandon, Mass., were being daily forwarded through the mails of that region; and it being deemed possible that a clue had at last been offered to the mystery in hand, I was sent northward to investigate." It took a while to get into this story but by ch. 3, it began to click. I was able to enjoy the rest. The ending was not what I had expected. Carolin does a great job. Yes she has improved. I am so grateful she takes the time to read for us. I hope to hear more mysteries from her.

Interesting mistery story by Anna Katherine Green. Good job, Carolyn. You read with a lot of expression and keep the story's interest. Thank you so much.

A good short mystery as others have mentioned. Carolin's reading is better here but to understand her you still may need to listen in a quiet area, using ear buds, & while concentrating on nothing else but her reading. Unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast when you listen to someone whose native language is not your own. Although I appreciate that so many people volunteer I think that only native English speakers with little to no accent should be reading here as it becomes easier for us to understand. I wouldn't read a story/book in Spanish to native Spanish speakers because despite education & practice I will not be as easily understood nor enjoyed. In the end, isn't that what should occur with every audiobook?

I personally enjoy the delightful inflection and personality that each reader uses, I might even say especially so when listening to non native speakers. This is actually a beautiful way for all English listeners to expand their comprehension and skills, by listening at length to someone who does not live in your same region of the country, or part of the world. I have heard many non native speakers reading who mispronounced words and phrases to the point of being undiscernable, but in spite of others' claims, this reader does not do that at all. I actually thought her austere accent and excellent french were an asset to the atmosphere of the book. Thank you, reader for the production.

A very good short novel. I enjoyed listening and was pleasantly surprised by a quicker, more mature reading voice in narrator Caroline. ( Unfortunately she narrated other Anna K. Green novels and was awful....I couldn't listen to the slow drone and annoying pitches.)

Good little detective story

Even though the reader has an accent I have enjoyed her books. I can understand her well and her voice has a nice tone and cadence. The story itself was an interesting little tangle to unweave.

I like AKG, and this was a favourite. Carolin, your reading, always clear, reached a new level in this one. It was conversational and alive, the faster pace suites you well.
