So-so story

(3 stars)

Only a so-so mystery story to my mind and not my favourite detective character. He's white and man who serves as his valet and general servant is black, and boy are we reminded of the fact frequently. He speaks to him in a familiar, friendly manner at times and rather unkindly at others, so be prepared for that (and the author's attempt to render black dialect) if you decide to listen. We're also reassured that another character's alibi comes "not from persons of his own nationality but from" respected local personages "whose word could not be doubted" and there are some xenophobic tropes about disease-carrying and so on. In short, the book shows its age more clearly than some others with regard to race. All that to say: it's a novel of its era. Then again, it's more modern than you might expect in its view of another matter which, being relevant to the plot I won't specify. The mystery itself just wasn't my favourite and felt a little bit untidy to me. I preferred "The Mansion Mystery" by the same author

This was a mostly good story

Mr Darcy awakes one morning to find his elderly cousin dead, apparently murdered. The police begin to collect evidence that points to him as the perpetrator of the crime. His fiance does not believe it and enlists the aid of the famous detective Ashley to help solve the crime and determine who the culprit is. This story was good, but somewhat off-putting. I felt like the author introduced too many angles. Recording wise, most of the chapters were good with a few rough ones here and there where I had to adjust the GE quite a bit, but overall this is still a good story worth a listen.

Some of the readers were very difficult to understand. Story line was good.

Would like better if just one reader.
