The Letters of Jane Austen

Read by Elizabeth Klett

(4.7 stars; 29 reviews)

This recording includes a selection of Jane Austen's letters, edited by Susan Coolidge and chosen from the collection of Austen's great-nephew, Edward, Lord Brabourne. The letters are mostly addressed to Austen's sister Cassandra, with whom she was very close. There are also some letters written to two of her nieces, Anna Austen Lefroy and Fanny Knight. They include some references to her published work, including Sense and Sensibility (abbreviated "S and S"), Pride and Prejudice (also called First Impressions, or P and P), Mansfield Park ("MP") and Emma. They are also replete with details about her family life, including the extended families and careers of her brothers, James, Edward, Frank, Henry, and Charles. Precious

(5 stars)

Listening to this reading of Jane Austen's letters was so precious! I felt like I was sitting in the room with her...privy to her thoughts as she wrote. It was like walking through life with Jane and her family. I enjoyed all the references to the novels and thoughts about them. I wonder if her niece published the work they were discussing.

I love Jane—and Elizabeth Klett!

Beautiful reading by EK! I love Jane Austen's wit, sharper here because so much of it is directed at the neighbors and acquaintances she shares with her sister and (later) nieces. I laughed out loud several times. I especially love seeing her mature and her priorities shift as she gets older. Beautiful ending with Cassandra's letters.

A beautiful reading of this very poignant text. A must read for every Jane Austen enthusiast or one that is curious to know what the allurement is of this great author.

Excellently read!
