It follows the lives and interactions of several French characters over a twenty year period in the early 19th century that includes the Napoleonic wars and subsequent decades. Principally focusing on the struggles of the protagonistâex-convict Jean Valjeanâwho seeks to redeem himself, the novel also examines the impact of Valjean's actions for the sake of social commentary. It examines the nature of good, evil, and the law, in a sweeping story that expounds upon the history of France, architecture of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, law, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love.

Obviously, an amazing story. What makes this recording fascinating is the snap shot of more "modern" history it provides of a time when radio was cutting edge technology and popular entertainment was served to the masses like this. It is a real treat to hear Orson Welles perform as well.

A very excellent Orson Welles production. This is not the reading of the entire novel but very good quality drama production.

Remember those comic books? Orson Welles created something similar here. Highly abridged. Ignoring the background of revolutionary politics of the period. Disappointing.
