Nineteen Eighty-Four, sometimes published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation, dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (or Ingsoc in the government's invented language, Newspeak) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite, that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrimes".
The tyranny is epitomised by Big Brother, the quasi-divine Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality but who may not even exist. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power." The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but he secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. (Summary from Wikipedia)

A great classic that's getting dusty
Great recording though beware, it is a very much abridged version I hear. It is a great book with lots of thought-provoking themes and ideas. It's even quite thrilling at times. But it's a bit simple in the world building and slow on the drama. The story is more of a vessel to present an idea than a thrilling ride with interesting environments and characters. It's slightly sparse in it's descriptions and character development. Still a must read!
1984 By George Orwell (Libravox recording)
Scarier now than when both the year and the book “1984” were both concepts of a dystopian world in the future. Ideas like “Doublespeak” are actively being used today. Definitions with variability and the like are the coin of the political realm NOW. Listen carefully. The Thought Police can now use your phone and your (a particular brand of television) to surveillance you NOW. The narration by Libravox Volunteer’s is TOP notch !
This is only an extremely abridged version, which I didn't realize until I finished it and wondered at how short it was. After reading the plot on Wikipedia I found details which weren't mentioned here. It's a high quality recording and voice acting, but I would have liked to have read the whole book, which I probably won't do now that I know the main spoilers.
pretty heartwrenching story
i borrowed this book from a friend forever and never got further than like 25% of it and now I've finally finished it, I'm glad and i think i understand a deeper meaning of power over minds now, it's eerie but honest in a way i like it, thank you for providing this wonder listen, and i can't wait to listen to more.
The Mysterious Stranger
well, though the reader was excellent I had read previous reviews that said that this version was shortened drastically. I've never read the unabridged version so I don't know how much for certain but I'd definitely like to read the full version to find out. other than that, it was great.
I love it
I really did enjoy the reading... I feel like it may not be all though. normally love in a noval like this can ruin it but idk I feel like it added something to it. if you like this book I would suggest ayn rand anthem
It was a very dark story of an oppressive regime, but parts are applicable to us now. Today's government keeps it's people subjugated by keeping them in slaved by debt and materialism. But the people are supposed to love the nation (big brother) keeps us enslaved.
Great voice. Stays close to the text. Made my prep work for teaching much easier—able to listen while driving, cooking, etc. This was also my first major audiobook experience—needless to say I will be listening to more in the near future!
