The Trumpet Major

Our heroine, Anne Garland, lives quietly in a rural community deep in the English countryside. However, the arrival of several regiments preparing for an expected invasion brings colour and chaos to the county. A graceful and charming young woman, Anne is pursued by three suitors: John Loveday, the trumpet-major in a British regiment, honest and loyal; his brother Robert, a merchant seaman and womaniser, and Festus Derriman, the cowardly son of the local squire. Set at the time of the Napoleonic wars, this is the author's only historical novel, and unusually for Hardy's books, some of the characters live happily ever after. loved it and most of the readers are fabulous and even the ones that aren't fabulous do a fair job

Wow!

Professional narration from some of the absolute best. I don’t usually listen to a book with multiple narrators as the transition can be rather jarring. However, I took a chance here and I’m so glad I did. What a special treat! Thank you narrators. The book is good and about halfway through it garnered my complete attention. All I can say is thank you

The LibriVox volunteer narrators have done a fantastic job here.

It was quite unusual for Hardy to pen historical fiction. He did it well in this novel.

Wonderful experience to listen to a book narrated by different voices. I was skeptical at the beginning, but fortunately all of them were good/great readers.

Beautifully done

One of my favourite Hardy novels is skillfully delivered by some of LV's very best readers. Thank you for hours of enjoyment.
