Celestina was adopted by Mrs. Willoughby from a convent in France. No one knows who her parents are. Her secret birth causes problems for her in the marriage market. But this novel is not only a courtship novel. It is about creating and keeping friendships, finding the meaning of family, the difference between love and obsession, and the development of Celestina from a dependent child to a strong woman of virtue. - Summary by Stav Nisser. A Candidate for Re-recording?

(2 Sterne)

I wanted to enjoy this story, but the volunteer who performed the greater part of this work was not up to the task. Much of the vocabulary was clearly unfamiliar to her and was therefore reduced to mangled nonsense. Perhaps the reader would do better with short works that could be practiced in advance or with simpler children’s literature. At any rate, it’s very jarring and frustrating as a listener, trying to get into the flow of the story, to be constantly mentally correcting the reader in order to make sense of the story. The rest of the reading was very well performed, however, and gave me the resolve to finish the book.

Mid book and I want to share with listeners that reader gets an A for effort but unfortunately her reading voice is a harsh staccato, like bullets. 45 minutes in and I have a headache. It would have helped If reader made herself familiar with the text by reading each chapter before speaking it. Librivox gave her a huge assignment without a critical evaluation. Once again, quantity not quality. If you turn the speed way up it helps. Thanks to reader for her hard work. Practice.

The reader’s reading level is VERY far below that which is required for this book. To say that this makes listening unbearable is an understatement.
