In this novel (often mistakenly classified a children’s book) the main protagonist Buck, a St. Bernard/Collie mix, is abducted and sold to a trainer of sled dogs in Alaska. He adapts to the brutal conditions and is finally acquired by a loving man. When this new owner is killed, Buck follows the ‘call of the wild’ and joins a pack of wolves. Absolutely loved the story. The first reader was my favorite. He really seemed passionate and had a great voice. The last reader was terrible. I will never listen to another story read by her. she had an awful Irish/English accent that was forced. I finished the book anyways bc of the story.

Great story. I was completely engrossed in this book until the final reader's clearly fake British/Scottish/Irish accent reared its ugly head. An exaggerated Hyacinth Bucket-style affectation. It seemed as if she took pleasure in making a mockery of a story that touches on such serious subjects. I know you get what you pay for, but I guess I've been spoiled by the quality of readers available among librivox volunteers. Five minutes with the final reader was enough to have me delete the book without completing it.

last reader was terrible!

Great story, I have loved it since I was a child. The last reader however had the worst fake accent I have ever heard. Plus you can hear her licking her lips far to many times. It kind of made me feel uncomfortable. Other then that it was a well done collaboration.

Perfect for 8th or 9th grade but enjoyable to everyone.

Wonderful story that is similarly told in legends from ancestors of every country with wolves. Jack London has the ability to decipher those mystical and awe inspiring feelings of the wild North into incredible imagery. I thoroughly enjoy his POV as the animal, as well. The readers all did a fantastic job, although one was fairly quiet with the infrequent bump of the microphone that makes you jump a little when listening with headphones. Another had a humorous fake european accent that while it made me smile at first, later took my attention away from the story in parts. It's a shame that reader felt an accent was necessary, because otherwise, she is an attention grabbing reader who uses effective tools to engage the listener. And, she's one of the best I've heard on Librivox, save the acting.

disappointing final reader.

The story itself is excellent and well paced and exciting. The first reader should have read the whole book through, the final two (especially the last) leave much to be desired in terms of tone, inflection and carrying the feeling of the text. It is hard to finish listening to chapter 7. But story is great and thanks to LibriVox for making it available for free!

great! but -1 for final reader

an interesting story, read at a good pace until chapter 7. it was torturous getting through the final reader's rendition. i don't mind that it oddly strayed from the american accents of the prior chapters, but it was slow and words were overly emphasized. it totally killed the excitement and intrigue built up from chapter 1 through 6.

I love this but don't like the reader in chapter 7

I love the book except the last reader (Everyone else that wrote reviews didn't like the last reader either) you have to be forced to listen to her the last reader and the first reader have a difference the first reader is more calm and great at describing things (really I should be giving Jack London the credit on description) anyways anyone listening to this book should also listen to Wind In The Willows that reader is really good to his name is Adrian Prezilesis or something like that but hopefully i can find a book read by the first reader!!

I’ve been reading this story in class and for the final chapter I chose to use this app. I love the app and how you can get many free audio books and how easy it is to get to the books you want. And Call of the wild is an amazing story I definitely recommend it! The reason I gave 4 1/2 stars is because the person who read the last chapter was kind of hard to understand. Thanks! P.S. . Read Call Of The Wild it’s really Good!!!👍
