Gone to Earth

"Gone to Earth" is the cry of fox hunters as the fox takes to its den and they lose the chase. Here, Mary Webb tells the story of Hazel Woodus whose understanding of her half tame fox cub contrasts with her misunderstanding of humanity. She is pursued by two very different men, the Squire of the Manor and the local Minister. Mary Webb wrote this book in 1917 and it is set in rural Shropshire of the late 1800s. Beautiful, sensitive reading of a Hardy-esque novel

(5 Sterne)

Lovers of Thomas Hardy will be delighted to discover Mary Webb, although in the Hardy mode we should expect no happy ending. The presentation is especially enhanced by the reader's soft West Country accent--Webb was (I think) from Shropshire. Thank you Rachel. Please favour us with more recordings in the future. 5 stars for the narration

(5 Sterne)

I read Precious Bane by the same author and it was so wonderful. This story was rather more difficult to get through due to the dialect of the main character. The narration was exceptional! Hence 5 stars.

Reading great, the rest? Not so much.

(2 Sterne)

Frustrating, weak heroine. And even for the time, the morals and views of sex and gender roles are irritating. My favourite character is the fox.

Thank you for reading so beautifully, my favorite author. I look forward to hearing Precious Bane.

So Sad

The descriptions of nature are like poetry. Beautiful to listen to.

I loved the narration. The story was three stars; reader five.

A beautifully written and read book! This should better known.
