John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. This is the first of the Barsoom series by ERB. I am reading them (okay listening to them) all in order. John Carter is an adventurer of earth who mysteriously finds himself on Mars. There, he is captured by the green men of Mars called the Tharks, but he is strong, and wins notoriety and riches for himself. He also meets Dejah Thoris, the princess of Helium, whom he falls in love with. He escapes with her only to be separated from her and find himself captured by another band of Tharks. Whew what a ride! Reading was excellent.
amazing story beautifully read.

John Carter's Barsoom adventures are frankly preposterous, even for Burroughs' day when people thought there might really be canals on Mars. However, the story has a momentum that propels it too fast to allow the reader to reflect on the inconsistencies of the plot or of the world Burroughs created. The constant cliffhangers and mild titillation gave the book great popularity among several generations of readers, including a number of science fiction writers who cited it as an important early influence. This book is a old-fashioned treat. For more reviews of free audio, visit www.freelistens.blogspot.com
An excellent adventure!

I loved this book, its action and pace kept my interest. The more I think about it this book is much more fantasy than sci-fi where the outcome is not in doubt, really. It is not surprising that it is a story of Europeans going to a new land and through force become their saviors or some such nonsense. Excellent adventure.
vivid science fiction

The wonder of such a vivid imagination, when the horizons of science seemed boundless, is refreshing compared to the techno-procedurals of today. Some attitudes of the author are anachronisms, and in picking up these early classics the one has to decide what to forebear. But what a world Barsoom is. Read with clear diction and high quality recording.
