this was a very good book

Quaint and Gossipy

(3,5 Sterne)

The author was a dog lover and ?breeder in a small way. He gives us a very brief history of dogs, then starts explaining the various ones in Great Britain during the late 1800s. Each chapter talks about one breed, or sometimes two closely related breeds, gives what is known about the history of them, describes what their purpose was, their appearance, (and why it was better 20 years ago,) then the gossip. I think the author knew everyone associated with purebred dogs in the North of England and most of Scotland; and he knows the names of their dogs. So the book see-saws between interesting and soporific. The narration is excellent.
