Doctor Thorne
Gelesen von Nicholas Clifford (1930-2019)
Anthony Trollope
Doctor Thorne is the third of Trollope's Barsetshire novels, and unlike some of the others, has little to do with the politics and personalities of the Church of England, or politics on the national level (though there is lots of politicking in the mythical county of Barsetshire itself). The plot revolves around the illegitimate Mary Thorne, who has been lovingly raised by her uncle, a country doctor, and who, as she comes of age, finds herself wondering whether she is a lady (in the county sense of the term). Frank Gresham, son of the squire of Greshamsbury, is in love with her (much against the wishes of his noble de Courcy relatives at the Castle), but she dismisses his affection at first as mere puppy love, thereby setting the scene for a series of entanglements, social, romantic, and of course, financial and propertied (never far from the action in Trollope's works). Their resolution, of course, makes up the meat of the novel. One critic has remarked that in Doctor Thorne Trollope succeeds in one of the most difficult tasks an author of fiction can face: how to make genuinely good people genuinely interesting, so that they engage not only the sympathies but also the interest of readers. Great Reading of a Neglected Book
Alessandro Serenelli
Many great series have books where people stop their progress through the journey; people read The Inferno, but rarely proceed through Purgatorio or Paradiso; they read The Three Musketeers, but rarely go on to the thrilling Twenty Years After or the massive Vicomte de Bragelonne. This is the Barsetshire novel that holds that same position. If you have already experienced the exquisite sentiment of The Warden and the hilarious panorama of Barchester Towers, I cannot urge you enough to keep going. The book feels different, but stick with it and within a few chapters, you will be hooked. Trollope is a fantastic author deserving of far more appreciation than he receives. The reader does a marvelous job and I am grateful for his effort to make this a solo work. I hope he will generously provide us solo recordings of Trollope's other works, especially the other Barsetshire an Palliser novels. Thank you for an excellent reading of a truly enchanting book.
Highly Recommend!

I’ve now listened to four Trollope novels in a row, and I love the fully-fleshed characters and the long sweeping story arcs. Dr. Thorne has been one of my favorites so far, especially for its tongue-in-cheek humor. Mr Clifford was a wonderful reader. I warmed to his voice right away, it was almost as if I could see that he had a smile on his face as I listened to him. I highly recommend this recording!
Great!

Nothing beats a Trollope tail... long & winding for an adult bedtime story or a rainy day of crafting... excellent reader so glad he did the whole book
Marry for money!

SPOILER ALERT!! Being a guy, books that have a lot of romance in them start to lose their charm, and this author puts quite a bit of it in, but his characters are so rich and his story engrossing, that I find I can put that aside and enjoy the story. The lesson of the book: “marry for money!” And if I might add one spoiler, “Mary for money.”
The True Charm of this Book is the Narration

Professor Clifford is one of my favorite narrators here on Libravox and he has never disappointed. With a genuine and calm tone to his voice Professor Clifford will take you into the depth of the many books he has read here on Libravox. Thank you Libravox for giving us the gentle sound of Professor Clifford. He is truly missed.
Fell in love with the characters

First of all, wonderful voice for the reading. The first three chapters are "set up" for the rest of the story, so don't get discouraged. Hang in there, and a moving muti-family story unfolds. I really didn't want it to end!
Trollope the control freak

Nice reading; not too many whinging “muhma”s. Makes me wonder about Trollope the man, who created these characters and then teases them around. It’s pretty draggy in the last quarter, full of explosive surprises that aren’t.
Excellent Trollope
