The Heir of Redclyffe (1853) was the first of Charlotte M. Yonge's bestselling romantic novels. Its religious tone derives from the High Church background of her family and from her friendship with a leading figure in the Oxford Movement, John Keble, who closely supervised the writing of the book. The germ of its plot was suggested by her friend Marianne Dyson. (Summary from Wikipedia) (24 hr 54 min)

Lessons learned

(4 Sterne)

Who is the heir of Redclyffe? You won’t know for sure until almost the end of the book. There are two unexpected plot twists. One very sad. Spoiler alert: the author thought it was OK to let the most admirable character die. This is not really a happily ever after story. But the beauty of the narrative is the progress the characters make in overcoming their own weaknesses. And the variety of those weaknesses is a tribute to the skill of the author. You are apt to find yourself in at least one of them. I have only one complaint. The author needs to learn herself, and teach her characters, self forgiveness.

Had to DNF this, the first narrator skoval is horrid. It doesn’t flow at all, this person unfortunately does not know how to read. It’s so choppy I can’t concentrate on the actual book as the narration doesn’t flow properly. Unfortunately I couldn’t get through a few chapters let alone 20 something to get a new reader.
