Originally published in 1873, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today is the only novel Twain co-wrote (C.D. Warner was a good friend and neighbor of the Clemens family in Hartford, and the collaboration sprang from their wives' challenge and encouragement). The title, "The Gilded Age" became synonymous with graft, materialism and corruption in public life, which are well represented in this work. Like others of his works, this one reflects truths about American Society that remain pertinent today. Many of the characters and incidents that occur in the Gilded Age had their real-life origins in Clemens relatives and history, a fact which he revealed in his newly published (2011) Autobiography. I was kinda surprised how much from their time, that matches our time, it just worded to were you may have to think about what the word would be in our time, if you can get past that ( I did with little effort ) it's a great story, layed out in such a way each character and their antics can be kept up with and enjoyed at the same time. to be honest I didn't really think that I would enjoy this book for several reasons this is the first Mark Twain story I actually chose to listen to outside of like a school assignment many many years ago also my genre of choice is Syfy, what is long-winded review boils down to is it actually is a good story well written and well read, give it a listen

Excellently read by John G. In fact I won’t listen to any other readers versions of mark twain. He is the master at imitating various accents and dialects of the south and northeast and the occasional European accent. When he reads, it is like I am watching a movie instead of listening to a book.

The topic of this book is part observation on awful bribery during 1875; and those daring fools who brougbt ghe great resources out of the ground and helped US boom into vast wealth to those who plaged the right game at the right time. Well drawn characters, speaking with typical Twain snark and observation bon mot's. The scene of Laura in the bookstore had me laughing aloud. Reader is perfect, gentle neutral, he slips into different tons in such a natural, I didnotice until auarfer oc the wway in. great highly recommended. Apologies for TYPOS, unable to see thext as I type on Android.

Enjoyable story with much despair for the good heroes. Very well read bringing the story to light. Well written but not to the standard of Mark Twain's best known works. An interesting tale of American life in mid 19th century. Worth a listen.

I really enjoyed listening to Mr. Greenman's version. He is the great voice actor and he perfectly interprets the story for the audiences. I listened to the entire story twice. Thank you, Mr. Greenman.

This story is very well read. The desire for riches and the willingness to do anything to get them are timeless motifs. This book could be set in modern America with a few slight tweaks.

The aim of the story is shine a light on the co4uption and hypocrisy of Washington DC. A bit hackneyed at times (issues of collaboration?) but none-the-less entertaining and at time funny.

Firstly, John has done an excellent job as usual in his narration. Now to the story, wow. This is one of my favorite Twain stories.
