Stoddard’s novel traces the education and development of a young female in American middle-class society. The protagonist, Cassandra Morgeson, is educated by a series of journeys she makes throughout her youth and early adulthood. Each new setting represents a different stage in her intellectual development.
Cassandra is born in Surrey, a small New England town. Surrey is quiet and isolated, granting a young woman little intellectual stimulation. Cassandra escapes the boredom of domestic life through stories of adventure and exploration. Surrey instills in Cassandra a restlessness that drives her quest for knowledge and experience.

The Morgesons

(5 Sterne)

LibriVox yet again brings a first rate author to our attention. And an excellent reader, too! The Morgesons is a satirical novel of manners with a difference. Several differences actually. The strong and interesting protagonist (Cassandra) and her eccentric (bonkers?) sister Veronica get up to the usual domestic stuff but the author's social critique pervades the plot and characters. All in all, a far and away more interesting work than most of the era and thoroughly worth reading/listening. Elizabeth Stoddard's style is terse and entirely without the wordiness of many other mid-19th century prose. It reads like a work of the late century in spite of having been written in 1862. Many thanks to the talented Julia Lenardon for her very professional reading. I enjoyed Veronica's squeaky voice, which makes her sound on the edge of crazy. Excellent diction and tone, and the pacing is very effective -- there's no rushing from one sentence to the next. More please, Julia! TheBookworm (Manchester, UK)
