This book follows the adventures of Emma McChesney, a smart and savvy divorced mother who travels the Midwest as a sales representative for a large skirt and petticoat manufacturer. She has learned to focus on her work and her seventeen-year-old son, Jock. Experience has taught her that it is usually best to stick to roast beef, medium and not get stomach ache with fancy sauces and exotic dishes. A truly wonderful story with fantastic nuance, perspective and an excellent recasting of the one against the many storyline. Here, as always, the heroine suffers with great humility and dignity while winning a reluctant acceptance by the foes she vanquishes without destroying them. This story is made even more attractive by Phil's narration, accents, and stylistics. An excellent pairing of this auditory feast.

This is my first time reading Edna Ferber and I am not disappointed . it is a delightful tale and I was so sad when it ended . the ending is fine, I just wanted more . you can be sure I'll be reading more of her work . as for the reader , I absolutely love the way Phil readss. His nuances in voice and emotion always are just right . You will definitely be entertained and caught up in this great little story .

I liked this story a lot. Its a somewhat pre-feminist tale of a strong independent woman, and written by a female author it avoids a lot of the pitfalls men hit when attempting such characters. As someone who travels for work myself there are some interesting resonances, so much and so little has changed in 100 years! The reader brings out the wry humour of it well. Well worth a listen

Great book. Great reader, one of my favorites. All the chapters cut out and reapeated before the end, including the last one. I'd ask for my money back, but I'll just have to buy the book instead, if I can find it.

What a terrific book! The heroine is surprisingly modern in her attitude and behavior. Plenty of snappy dialog, amusing and well-drawn characters, and an unusual plot. Oh, and perfect narration!

Great Reader. Fun Story of a headstrong hardworking woman. The readers always go too fast for me, so I slow them down with the speed adjustment.
