After a rather dissolute youth and having been disowned by his father, John Caldigate sets sail for Australia with his friend Dick Shand hoping to make his fortune in the goldfields in New South Wales. On the voyage, he meets Euphemia Smith and they conduct an indiscreet affair aboard. After various problems, Caldigate literally strikes gold and returns to England. On his return, Caldigate meets and marries a previous acquaintance, Hester Bolton, and they have a son. He sets himself up as his father’s heir and life seems perfect. However, Euphemia suddenly reappears and claims they were married in Australia, making Caldigate a bigamist and his son illegitimate. (Summary by Simon Evers) (19 hr 37 min)

Great reading, good story

(4 Sterne)

This is a good story but perhaps lessened by its length. At 19 hours it's long in the telling but enjoyable enough thanks to the excellent narration.

Superb!

Great story, characterization and reader! Trollope is amazing! Another Dickens! As is usual, starts out slow but then it picks up speed .... Don't miss it!

Great Reader.

(4 Sterne)

Mr Troloppe writes an interesting if not a somewhat long-winded story. Because the reader is so good it is pleasant to hear.

a lovely reading and a great yarn - just complicated enough and with plenty of twists and turns.

Not the Lightest Trollope

(3 Sterne)

Well read, as always, by Mr Minter. Thank you!Trollope writes gracefully at an ambling gait but may seem ponderous and repetitious to the uninitiated, particularly when as here many of the characters are older, methodical men of business. The scenes in Australia are fascinating. The young heroine is enchanting. Her mother is a savagely drawn Puritan. For your first Trollope I recommend The Card, a lighthearted tale also read by Andy Minter and made into a delightful old movie with Alec Guinness.

Most enjoyable and worthy of its length.

Exceptional reader ! I have never really been drawn to Trollope but I'm so glad I chose to this time & is in part because of the narrator, he had me hooked on first chapter. That said the book is equally entitled to the 5 stars.

Great reader, 2nd rate Trollope

(4 Sterne)

Trollope is always entertaining, but this one is a little overlong and repetitive in places. Still, the story is a good one, and worth a listen. The reader is great. I will be looking for more of Simon Evers's performances!!!

enjoyed it!

The author of this was a brilliant writer. He has a knack of being able to consider the way people would look at matters and react to them, and puts a lot of depth into his storytelling. Beautifully narrated too.
