Well read and yes...derogatory in parts...some history of California... adventures of young teens... understand of the culture of the time...recommend but not at the top of your list

I think the reader must do her chores between chapters, the pause is far too long, sometimes upto 15 minutes!

The author is very insulting to American Indians reflecting the prevalent bias of his time, but otherwise the adventures are very enjoyable.
