Some Experiences of an Irish R.M.

Gelesen von Andy Minter (1934-2017)

This is the first of three novels which Edith Somerville and her cousin Violet Martin wrote about the English Major Sinclair Yates who leaves the army to take up a position of Resident Magistrate in the West of Ireland in about 1895. The tales tell in a humorous way of his struggles with a new job, new culture, and with his landlord and neighbour Mr. ‘Flurry’ Knox whose prime, if not only, interest is in hunting, which forms the background to all the stories. Miss Somerville was herself the first woman anywhere to become an M.F.H.

Humour and history

(5 Sterne)

Thank you S & R, wherever you both may be, for having such a keen comedic eye and for being such an aware pair of the English Ascendency. and thank u Andy Minter rip for bringing it all so richly to life. The reading is a joy I keep repeating. Thank u to libavox!

I'm sorry to give this such a low score, because the reading is excellent.

This is one of those books in which an outsider enters a community of interesting eccentrics, and is fleeced, than embraced. I found it difficult to enjoy, because the protagonist doesn’t actually motivate the plot, being carried along by others, and I didn’t find the chief rogue charming enough. Recommended for those people who understand why the characters could find foxhunting interesting enough to write many, many chapters about it. The reading is excellent, but the content never hit home for me.

Side-splitingly funny!

(5 Sterne)

These stories are incredibly funny. I found myself laughing out-loud as I listened. Andy Minter does an excellent job of bringing them to life - complete with all the various accents from high to low on the social ladder. Andy is among Librivox's most talented readers, especially when it comes to rural tales and rustic UK accents. Great book, great narrator

Thank you Andy Minter for bringing this beautifully written and humorous book to life. You captured the tone of the book perfectly and have done great credit to the characters and their ccents (in my humble opinion), in particular Flurry Knox!

excellent, narrator is a gem. His barchester readings superb.being Irish and having visited the area as well, can appreciate all the story.Timothy you are totally missing the point, this is exactly how it was in those times pre 1916 rising Ireland.
