Ben Connor is a gambler who knows horses. He goes out west to get away from the gambling life he has been leading in New York. There he discovers a breed of grey horses that he thinks are the best horses he has ever seen. The problem is that these horses are bred in a secret valley known as the Garden of Eden and that outsiders are not welcome there. Connor sees these horses as a means of getting rich on the race tracks, but how to get one is a problem.

A great horse story coupled with the typical excitement one expects from Max Brand makes this a great book. - Summary by Richard Kilmer (7 hr 42 min)

Sweet story of a bygone era, sadly soon to be erased into the yawning caverns of deliberately censored, eliminated, banned, and burn able fuels rapidly paving the way into tomorrow's sterilized, squeaky clean, P/C'ed, view of "Our Commitment " to a vast future "History" !?! Books such as this have no place in "Real" scholarships that are now being banned for simply stating that there are such things as slavery, smoking, drinking, and the freedom to ride for days or weeks out in a wild new world suddenly depopulated of fellow humans via the unchecked spread of diseases through out a vulnerable population.

Parallels to the Bible

This is one of the best stories by Max brand. It has some interesting plot twists to it, but all turns out very nice. One of my favorites.

STRANGE EVEN FOR BRAND

(4,5 Sterne)

I would classify this not as a western, but as an allegory. Brand has unique plots, but this one is his high-point. It is almost like a delirious dream. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable, especially since it was read by RK.

Agree....allegorical aspect.. the title was the draw... a western ???...written so I constantly thought about the ending which did not play out to any of my scenarios...the characters are crisp and clear... the ending abrupt but expected...unique story so I recommend

Very strange story line. Ended abruptly and left me wondering why I listened to the entire thing. Guess I was bored. Poorly written, under developed and abrupt ending. Waste of my time.
