Aunt Lucretia — 'Crete' to her family — is a sweet, patient older woman, who lives with her narrow-minded sister and spoilt niece, acting as their unpaid and unappreciated domestic servant. When they leave town in order to avoid the unexpected visit of a "backwoods" cousin, she is left at home to welcome him. She's willing to love him whatever he's like, and he's looking for a home having lost his mother years before, so the two are ready to become fast friends. But what does that mean for Aunt Crete's prejudiced relatives and how can their wrongs against her be remedied? - Summary by Cori (2 hr 41 min)

Very well done

Good, but very predictable story, even with all that, very well worth the listening time. This is one of those books which are the old flannel quilts one keeps just to burrow into on icy winter evenings with the special hot chocolate, whipped cream, and buttery sugar cookies on the side !

The reader gives this book an "Austen" feel!

I have read this book in the past and loved it, but I felt like I had heard it for the first time when listening this version. The reader gave the book a certain quality that took me away to a different world and a different time. Truly felt like an Austen book or as another reviewer said, a grown up Cinderella!

Loved this book. Although it was short it was very refreshing! The reader was very pleasant to listen to, I didn't want the reading to end!

well read, mindless but sweet escape from reality.

Fabulous

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. If you like gentle, turn of the century stories, this one is for you. Aunt Crete is a character well worth rooting for and her nephew is as compassionate as he is intelligent. This is one of my favorite stories available on Librivox :)

True Blue Americana

I liked this story a lot. Interesting when some of the phrases are read out of context due to the cultural thing. Like in the last ch., "I like that" is a scornful curse. He doesnt actually like it, ;) The niece's snippy attitude is conveyed perfectly.

Aunt Crete's Emancipation

This tale tells the in so many ways the power of kindness or hateful words! The ' Just Desserts' that Evil rewards bring are well thought out by the author and carried AMAZINGLY well by the Narrator.
