AFRS G I. Jive

(4.7 stars; 3 reviews)

G.I. Jive was a 15-minute music program that was produced & broadcast by the U.S. government via the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) radio network. Early shows had a variety of hosts: Frank Nelson, Lester Jay, and popular pin-up girls like Donna Reed were guest DJs. In 1943, G.I. Jill (Martha Wilkerson) took over behind the mike, and according to the AFRTS Archive blog, G.I. Jive became the most popular show on AFRS. The dates of these files are approximate; I looked up the dates of the songs and extrapolated from there. Any typos or errors are mine. :) Here are a list of the files and the songs included therein (the songs are listed in the "comments" tag of the MP3 file as well): 1943-xx-xx AFRS GI Jive 0271 Tommy Dorsey.mp3 Tommy Dorsey: Mandy, Make Up Your Mind (reviewed in Billboard Jan 23, 1943) Isham Jones: Blue Lament Fletcher Henderson: Variety Stomp (1927) Larry Clinton: Study In Blue (1938) _____________________________ 1943-xx-xx AFRS GI Jive 0272 Navy Day Carol Bruce Good Queen Bess.mp3 Duke Ellington: Good Queen Bess (1940) Rex Irving's Modern Men Of Music: Babushka Hop Jimmy Dorsey: Don't Be That Way Red Nichols: King Kong _____________________________ 1943-xx-xx AFRS GI Jive 0414 Joe Turner.mp3 The Dixieland Jazz Group (of NBC's Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street ... see more here http://www.archive.org/details/ChamberMusicSociety ): Joe Turner Blues Artie Shaw: Indian Love Call Jimmy Dorsey: Murderistic (1942) Charlie Barnet: The Sergeant Was Shy _____________________________ 1943-xx-xx AFRS GI Jive 0415 Lucky Millinder.mp3 Lucky Millinder: Are You Ready? A quick hit during your break

A great bunch of songs chosen by the troops. Sure most of the jokes are corny, but they are actually kind of refreshing. There are another bunch of G.I. Jive recordings (some of them duplicates) here: https://archive.org/details/G.i.Jive & https://archive.org/details/G.i.Jive-page2
