Laddie's Magical Glowing Balls Of Colored Gas

Read by Richard Stephenson

(5 stars; 1 reviews)

Laddie is a schizophrenic inmate who lives in the violent, obscene environment of a maximum security prison. Delusions swirl in his mind like white corpuscles trying to heal a wound. Laddie takes comfort in owning Magical Glowing Balls of Colored Gas. He also has long conversations with a spider. Laddie’s first person narrative is a challenge.

Near the end of his sentence for assault, Laddie allows a therapist named Richard to speak to him once a week. Richard uses Dr. Hyman Spotnitz’s modern psychoanalysis to treat him. Meanwhile, Chou Chou, a transvestite, is the only inmate who befriends Laddie. Dr. Silladakarra tries an experimental psychotropic on Chou Chou. With dignity and affection, Laddie tries to comfort the dying Chou Chou.

To no avail, Richard tries to protect Laddie from being released into society before he becomes stable enough to function. Ruggert Prison gives Laddie $90 and leaves him on a street corner in Philadelphia.

Hi Barry, I appreciate honesty. Laddie, like many of my former patients, is a soft spoken, cautious and timid soul. He is the narrative baseline and he is the foil for a novel with 3 dozen characters, many of whom speak loudly and quickly. My Shure mic helped a lot ...

This was a treat. I'm a firm believer in that there's no point to listening to a book/any creative work aloud unless the narration brings something special to the piece - and the narration certainly brings this work to another level. Laddie is sometimes haunting, sometimes sweet, but always fascinating. ...

Wow. I always try to give a book a chance but the audio quality and the narration pacing made this unlistenable. It might be fine writing but I couldn't get more than 5 minutes into it. Sorry.

There is something wrong with the sample rate you chose or the compression protocal. (Not a sound engineer, sorry). That was part of the audio problems I heard. Check with someone who knows. Best of luck

I found this book fascinating. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes hypnotic. This is the first audiobook I've encountered that approached the level of Outsider Art. And I found the narration impassioned and otherworldly. If you're looking for something very, VERY different, you've found it. That said, this won't be everyone's cup of ...
