Jasmine Guffond :: Orgue 2

ORGUE 2 Is one of six compositions produced during a one month residency in Arles sur Tech, Pyrenees Orientales France, January 2010. I made recordings of the various extended sonorities of the XVII century organ at the local Saint Mary Abbey. I became interested in the sound of the decay of the organ notes within the reverberant space of the historic abbey. While engaging with the gradual decrease of sound until the point of disappearance, and especially these moments when the organ's notes evaporated into silence, I found that the surplus noise floor of the environment became in itself charged with a musical and aesthetic quality. I used these recordings as source sounds for a series of 2 – 4 minute compositions which where then transmitted through the loudspeaker announcement system located in the streets of the town centre.
