(4.8 stars; 947 reviews)

Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen's first published novel, focuses on the lives and loves of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. The sensible Elinor and the sensitive Marianne both fall for men whose affections are otherwise engaged. The novel includes a wonderful cast of colorful supporting characters, as well as Austen's trademark dry wit and ironic narration. (Summary by Elizabeth Klett) (10 hr 52 min)

Sense and Sensibility

(5 stars)

I never tire of listening to Ms. Klett as she grasps and relays the tone, virtue and nature of the characters of this book and others. Her choice of Librivox books and her gift of reading are both timeless and fulfilling.

Flawlessly Naraated

(4 stars)

The story is a bit slow in the beginning but as the plot develops, it is sure to grab your attention for good. Elizabeth Klett has done a fantastic narration with her spirited voices and accents for every character making it a wonderful read. No one does it better than Ms. Klett.

Truly enjoyable rendition

(5 stars)

Even though I had seen every film version of this book, I had not actually read it. When I found this site and this title, I decided to listen to the book instead of reading it. And I am so happy I did!! Jane Austen's actual wording and phrasing made me appreciate the story even more than I expected. Also, the narration by Elizabeth Klett was spot on, and each character was easily distinguishable. I think it enhanced my enjoyment much more than if I had read it and tried to imagine the different voices in my head.

The cult of sensibility examined

(4 stars)

Beautifully read, Austen's first novel is less even in its appeal than her later work but nonetheless an interesting and often sparkling tale. Austen's tone in the early part is more severe and a bit off-putting, so I enjoyed the novel more as it progressed and developed the nuance familiar in her subsequent writing. Overall, however, it's a fascinating insight into how the cult of sensibility was gripping society at the time.

Narrator deserves 5 stars!

(5 stars)

After following a group discussion on this book, I have learned that I actually do not like the story. So I reduced my rating of the novel itself from 4 stars (in my earlier readings) to 2 stars… but this audiobook version still gets 5 stars for me because the quality of Elizabeth Klett's narration is EVERYTHING.

well done and consistent reading

(5 stars)

Well done. No over-the-top voices or animation. Just well-paced, clear characterization. Elizabeth Klett is an excellent reader with a steady pace and clear diction. No technical flaws such as volume changes mar this reading and there are no mouth noises or breath noises to distract. Well done Ms. Klett and thank you.

Great narration.

Read with consistently great confidence, measure and precision throughout this looong, so-so novel. The narration is great; check reviews of the story before choosing to start (or skip).

Great Reader & Great Novel

(5 stars)

Although the story starts out at a rather slow pace it becomes addictive after the first few chapters. I found myself truly struggling to keep going at first, but I am so happy I pushed forward because it only got drastically better. So stick with it!! The reader, Elizabeth Klett, is amazing and reads the novel with both emotion and eloquence. I have listened to her read a few books now and love how she reads. Definitely look her up! Overall, if you have enjoyed other Jane Austen novels, you will certainly enjoy Sense and Sensibility.
