"If, in these pages, written in remembrance of my father, I should tell you, my dear friends, nothing new of him, I can, at least, promise you that what I shall tell will be told faithfully, if simply, and perhaps there may be some things not familiar to you." So begins chapter one of My Father as I Recall Him, the personal recollections of Mary Dickens, (Mamie, as she was called), the oldest daughter of the great novelist, Charles Dickens. I greatly enjoyed learning some intimate details of Dickens from the perspective of one of his daughters. For instance, reading or listening to Bleak House, it comes as no surprise that he had a great love for birds. The most riveting story is that of a train accident in which he was involved. This alone makes the narrative very worthwhile. The rather uneven quality of the readers in this version detracts a bit from the overall enjoyment of the narrative. I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in some personal and endearing details characteristic of this great author.
A new point of view!

I had no idea Dickens' daughters wrote about him. I've always been a fan of... different perspectives, and this one really pulled all my strings. 5 stars definitely! Review created Jan 22, 2022.
