Counterspy
Phillips H. Lord
Counterspy, sometimes known as David Harding, Counterspy, was a popular radio program that aired from 1942 to 1957. The series followed David Harding, the chief of the fictitious "United States Counterspies," as he worked to disrupt enemy agents and their operations. Created by Phillips H. Lord, who also developed the hit series Gang Busters, the show was produced in New York.
Harding was portrayed by Don McLaughlin, whose commanding voice reassured listeners that all stories would conclude positively. His assistant, Peters, played by Mandel Kramer, often took on the less desirable tasks. The Counterspies operated around the clock, seemingly with unlimited resources and advanced communication technologies, making them a formidable force in protecting the nation.
The series enjoyed significant success, appealing to both adult and teenage audiences. It was broadcast twice a week in some years, allowing for engaging two-part stories. However, after moving to the Mutual network in 1953, the quality of production and scripts declined, falling short of the high standards set during its peak in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Years later, Mandel Kramer would become known for his role as Johnny Dollar, marking the end of an era for radio's golden age.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
