I had forgotten about this show. sup exciting to hear so many familiar voices. But Season 1-EPISODE 15 originally aired 1941-12-07. I got absolute chills as the news updates kept breaking in during the show. my goodness....I can't imagine how that must have been to hear live...

A look at life during WWII

The Visit from Cousin Octavia was broadcast on Dec. 7, 1941 (the day of the attacks on Pearl Harbor). After that, The Great Gildersleeve often covered issues as scrap metal drives, wanting to find ways to help the war effort, such as Leroy running away to join the Navy, etc. The original lineup included the great radio actress, Lurene Tuttle (sheriff's wife in "Pyscho" and landlady in "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" w/Don Knotts as Marjorie. Marjorie started out as a college graduate but in the 3rd season, became a high school student with a different actress.

Still entertaining

I'm a big fan of radio mysteries, having started with CBS Radio Mystery Theater when I was a kid, but I'd never tried any OTR comedies. This is a great place to start. The ensemble cast is wonderful, and while the gags are sometimes corny, most shows hold their own. My kids love them, and it's fun to see each of them camped out listening in front of one of the stereo speakers as if they were old Philco floor radios.

Internet at its best.

I suppose it depends upon your age, but I find this collection the finest available. At 68 years of age, I remember a great many of these shows, and nostalgia buff that I am, I can't thank whoever put this collection together enough. I am constantly trying to steer younger people to Old Time Radio, with limited success. In any case, thank you once again for a fine endeavor. W.E. Baser, Albuquerque, NM.

The Cure for a long commute!

(5 Sterne)

I just recently started a new job with a long commute. I listen to one episode each way to work. I absolutely love each episode! This radio show from decades ago is better than any television. I look forward to every episode. I'll be sorry when I'm finished with all the seasons... I guess I'll start Fibber McGee and Molly then. I don't think I'll enjoy them as much as Gildersleeve!

The Best Kind of Entertainment

(5 Sterne)

I find The Great Gildersleeve is best listened to while cooking, cleaning, in bed or especially drawing. I find that as an artist I work best when listening to something while I work, and what better masterpiece to listen to then a good old fashioned comedy. Even after listening to every episode I still can't help listening to the classics.

This is the best commidy I've ever heard!

(5 Sterne)

If your new to OTR, and you wern't around in the time period, I think you'll really enjoy this Commidy. It's one of the first situational commidy spinoffs of it's time, and it's a very enjoyable listen. You won't regret listening to the whole thing! I know I didn't.

The Great Gildersleeve, Season 1

(5 Sterne)

Widely-acknowleged as radio's first spin-off, Harold Peary expanded his role as Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve from FM&M into his own half hour show. While still corny rather predictable after 60+ years it remains a great listen. Peary's magnificent and his supporting cast is first-rate. All ages should enjoy these shows.
