Strangers and Pilgrims follows the journey of Elizabeth Lutterell from a vain, beautiful and self-centred although good-hearted 19 year old to a mature woman. She begins her journey to maturity when she meets the Rev. Malcolm Forde, whose influence opens her eyes to the trivial and selfish ways of the wealthier levels of society. When her genuine love for Malcolm Forde is thwarted and she becomes trapped in a cold, loveless marriage of convenience, she suffers illness, tragedy and regret. Will she find ultimate happiness?
A hugely prolific and popular author, M. E. Braddon was known as the “queen of the Sensation Novel” because of the taboo social subjects in some of her novels. In her own life she courted scandal by living in a de facto relationship with her publisher and becoming mother to six children and also step-mother to five of his children – his wife reportedly being in an asylum in Ireland, although her family denied this. In this novel, published about a year after the wife’s reported death, the scenes dealing with mental illness, its treatment and the difficulties of those seeking divorce are well observed, perhaps from the personal experiences of the author. if Anthony Trollope and Wilkie Collins collaborated on a novel they would have written this one. the description of Lady Paulen's (sp?) dinner party is without peer. The behavior of the main characters may be hard for us to believe more than a century later, but without many rights, broader education and experience, and living in a stifling rural English town, they aren't so unbelievable. of course, everything that can go wrong, does. But isn't that the plot of almost every Thomas Hardy novel? The readers are fine - sometimes the recording needs to be slowed down or sped up a little.

The author does a masterful job of helping us see a wonderful example of a true love, kept deeply in one's heart. I agree with others who thought the turns in the novel were always a bit too sad. ... and the ending...? Why? !!!

I have found two new favorite readers. I hope to find more common book they do. this story will require tissue nearby. not my type at all. life is too sad already. still, a good nany will enjoy.

I really enjoyed Annie7's reading, but found John's to be overly expressive and unnatural. If he'd read as people actually speak, I think he'd do better. Still, thanks to both for the hard work.
