This work presents Rousseau's belief in the profoundly transformational effects of the development of civilization on human nature, which Rousseau claims other political philosophers had failed to grasp. Specifically, before the onset of civilization, according to Rousseau, natural man lived a contented, solitary life, naturally good and happy. It is only with the onset of civilization, Rousseau claims, that humans become social beings, and, concomitant with their civilization, natural man becomes corrupted with the social vices of pride, vanity, greed and servility. A difficult and challenging listen. Certainly requires a revisit or a good reading around the subject following listening. ok narration.

Although many of the facts of the progress of the human race do not vindicate Rousseau's assumptions of history, it is true that civilization and society have brought on ills to people that pre-civilized persons would not have contended with. In this way I suggest people listen for what the author got right, instead of what he got wrong. The reader for this piece brought the appropriate amount of passion to this work that writings of this kind necessitate.

pretty good at first, nice reasoning and theorizing but then the writer starts projecting his agenda and it becomes communist gobbledygook. he even says the revolution will have to solve the problems. 🙉
