After seven years of silence, Guy Markenmore returns to his family home at Markenmore Court. Knowing his father Sir Anthony to be close to death, he is anxious to reassure his younger siblings that he will not make any claim to the family money even if he can't help inheriting the old man's title. Sir Anthony dies later that evening, but the question of the inheritance becomes academic when Guy is murdered whilst crossing the downs. It is now up to detective Blick to track down the person responsible for Sir Anthony’s death. - summary by Sharon Kilmer (9 hr 19 min)

I wouldn’t put this at the top of JS Fletcher, but as always, it was an enjoyable story. I don’t know why Fletcher doesn’t have a bigger name in old mystery because I have yet to come across one I didn’t enjoy! Great characters and mystery!

Clueless Detectives

The readers are good but the book, not so much. In the French translation of the this book the title is "Le chien de markenmore" very apt since without the dog the detective never would have solved the mystery.

Great story so many twists and turns. Kept me guessing to the end.

I didn't spot the murderer in this story! Wonderful reading!

Good story. Entertaining and not romantic.

Stock characters, fussy plot, obtuse detective

This was like a Hallmark mystery, but too long and ultimately the author seemed desperate for a resolution. Detective Sgt. Blick of Scotland Yard should have brought along Inspector Japp, as the sergeant seems to have no knowledge of forensics, which Scotland Yard was already famous for at that time, and he doesn't solve the case so much as fall into the solution, almost literally. Combined with an excessive number of one-dimensional stock characters, and an awkward attempt at countrified dialect. it makes for a heavy slog. For "murder in the manor" set in a quiet village, stick with Agatha Christie.
