American Indian Fairy Tales

Gelesen von Chip

With no written language, Native Americans living in the Lake Superior region passed their cultural identity down through the generations by way of stories. Far more than mere tales to amuse children, they passed along the collective wisdom of the tribes. In the 1830s, government Indian Agent and ethnologist Henry R Schoolcraft learned the language of these people and went out to collect and preserve their stories before the tribes disappeared under the westward rush of American civilization. Though these stories were recast as children’s fairy tales in the 1920s, they contain much of the old wisdom of a culture which has largely disappeared. (Summary by Chip) (2 hr 49 min)

Important and Charming

(5 Sterne)

So little remains of so many tribes' cultures, so this set of stories is an important archive. The stories are also enchanting - not *haunting*, that's not the right word, but their magical feeling lingers with you long after the listening. Would be great for kids on a car trip, too.

Great story teller/reader Wonderful tales!

Great stories!

This was an excellent collection of stories. "Chip from Tampa" sounds like a fun guy in his introductions, and he reads the stories very well. Even the pronunciation of the native American names sounds natural (I don't know if it's right, but it flows, and that's what's important). I would've liked a the book to have a little more info on the origins of each tale because I like the back-story, but that's the only thing that kept me personally from giving five stars.

interesting stories

I was looking for a collection of short stories and came across this. Its read very well and the stories are interesting although a few tend to end abruptly of leave you with questions bit all in all a good listen.

Excellent reading and delightful stories. Looking forward to sharing this with my children.

Amazing! And yet…

This is so great! However, I wish Chip did more full books, seems like he just does a bunch of small parts in longer stories. I know that he will probably never see this, but there is maybe a one two-thousandth chance, and that’s better than nothing (although, admittedly, not all that much better)!

Another one bites the dust!

As always, another well spoken & interesting tale told by Chip. Instead of the last line being, 'There goes Grasshopper...see how well he dances!' it should be, 'There goes Chip...hear how well those words just rolled off his tongue!'
