Some Hints on this Set

(5 Sterne)

The various AFRS collections are a grab bag from the past, and so much of this is YMMV material. If you like big band music, some thoughts: The shows GI Jive and Jill's All Time Jukbox feature GI Jill, the AFRS answer to Tokyo Rose. They must not have given her too high a record budget because, even on thse old recordings, you can tell her records are scratchy. The music is not bad, but you probab;y have heard it all before. The 1945 One Night Stand featuring Duke Ellington features Duke in concert hall mode. There's a lot of live Elington from 1945, courtesy of the US Treasury Victory Bonds, and this does not add too uch to the store of knowledge. Worth a listen, though. The One Night Stand featuring Ted Lewis shows that, while Ted was still back in the 10s and 20s with his style, his band was sampling Andy Kirk and Count Basie to good effect. Rather a fun remote. Henry Busse, another star who peaked in the 20s, has a band that is very much 1945, but the shuffle rhythm he inflicts on the orchestra keeps it from cutting loose. Still, interesting to hear bands thought of us sweet bands swinging hard.
