I was listening to this book to help me sleep at night; the narrator has a smooth steady voice, and at least to begin with, the anecdotes about animals were sweet and interesting to listen to. As the book progressed, the author moved onto animals that are more of a pest to farmers, and therefore he discussed ways in which these animals are dealt with, such as trapping. Although I don't object to farmers protecting their livelihoods, either in the past or the present, it wasnât great night time listening for me. However I persisted in the hope the author would move onto less damaging animals. But it was to no avail. I reached the midway point to a chapter on porcupines in which the author describes beating a porcupine to make its spines come out. He seems to be doing this out of intellectual curiosity, but it disgusted me too much to continue reading.

Animals presented by an extraordinary naturalist. I am not going to listen to a childrenâs book about squirrels! At least thatâs what I thought. But I clicked on it just because it was right there in front of me. I was quickly hooked. If you listen, as I did, you will find yourself being taken on quite a wild ride indeed! The author, naturalist John Burroughs, possessed extraordinary keen insight, enabling him to accumulate a vast knowledge of the wild animals he grew up with in the North Eastern woods of our country 140 years ago. His natural gift of understanding nature is combined with excellent writing ability. You will encounter stories of hunting and trapping, which to me is lamentable; but he states the facts as they were. I have known for quite a while that reader, Laura Caldwell, is among the best of the best, but it has dawned on me that she apparently also uses consummate technical skill when producing her readings. I normally listen in my darkened bedroom using a $300 20 year old Techniques stereo amplifier, considered by âaudiophilesâ to be lower end equipment. However, Lauraâs readings are so clear, one can almost imagine her sitting in a rocking chair right there in the room reading to you. I am not going to listen to a childrenâs book about squirrels! I have listened to this book many times. I have insomnia, and have enjoyed these stories to help me fall asleep. But, a few of them have almost kept me awake wanting to know what happens next.❤️
